NHS Apprenticeships

The National Health Service (NHS) is one of the biggest employers in the world and the largest in Europe, employing some 1.3 million staff.  This figure includes staff in hospital and community services, ambulance workers, mental health specialists, support workers and central management bodies.  There are also many other staff groups, such as GPs and dentists, but they are not directly employed by the NHS.

Slightly more than half of NHS staff have clinical roles, such as doctors, nurses and midwive, but an enormous variety of roles are needed to keep the NHS running, such as IT staff, administrative staff, cleaners and maintenance workers (source: The King's Fund).

Given that there are so many different jobs within the NHS, it's impossible to cover all of them here - the NHS careers website lists over 350 different careers within the NHS.  Because the NHS is such a big employer, there are currently thousands of job vacancies being advertised.  These vacancies vary from medical positions, to biomedical science, through to clerical roles.

It might be that nursing is your vocation and you would love to work for the NHS, or perhaps you would like to pursue a career as an IT specialist working for a huge company like the NHS. 

Despite being completely different, both of these jobs, and hundreds of others, are essential components to the smooth running of such a big organisation.

Nursing Apprenticeship

Nursing is a broad field, encompassing a variety of roles and working in many different environments.  The majority of nursing roles will be working within the NHS, in a wide range of roles.  In 2021, there were nearly 670,000 registered nurses in the UK.

Nursing is the UK's most employable degree, with 94% of students getting a job within six months of finishing their course (source: NHS Health Careers). The majority of nurses in the UK qualify by completing a nursing degree at university, but you can also get into nursing through an apprenticeship.

You will need to decide which field of nursing you wish to study in - adult nursing, children's nursing, learning disability nursing or mental health nursing.  Some degrees allow you to study two fields of nursing in a 'dual field' degree.

At least £5000 is available to help eligible undergraduate and postgraduate student nurses fund their studies.  This is a grant that does not need to be repaid.

You may decide to work in primary health care, that is the point at which patients first interact with health care providers, normally in a GP surgery, or in secondary health care, that is the point at which patients are referred for specialist medical care, normally in a hospital setting.

You may choose to specialise in geriatric care and work within a care home for the elderly, or in children's care, working on a children's ward of a hospital or in a specialist children's hospital. 

'Nursing' encompasses a huge range of roles.

Retail Apprenticeship

Working in retail can involve everything from working in a shop to working in administration or retail buying. Jobs can be with a retail specialist selling specific items, such as beauty products, or cover various products. Depending on the type of retail job you choose, you may deal with customers or work in management and coordinate employees.
