Job Title: Health & Safety Officer

Reporting To: Quality Manager

Location: South Shields, UK

Days / Hours: Monday to Friday / 39 hours per week

Purpose of the Role:

§To act as the organisation's competent person for Health and Safety & Environmental matters as defined by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

To ensure the organisation complies with current and forthcoming Health and Safety & Environmental legislation. Approved Codes of Practice and guidance in relation to employment and service provision.

Areas of Responsibility:

To work proactively with managers to establish and maintain a system that promotes a culture of safe working practices across the organization. To assist managers, implement Health & Safety systems and procedures to meet specific requirements, such as accident reporting and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) in a consistent and effective manner.

To provide direct support and leadership of the Health, Safety and environmental requirements to all departments including the battery directive.

To ensure the Company's Health, Safety & Environmental Policy is implemented and monitored consistently across Saft (UK) Limited.

To assist in the identification of training needs for employees and develop/deliver training as required. To support managers to maintain safe systems, providing specialist advice, coaching and practical support.

Ensure all contracting employees are compliant and work in accordance with site procedures.

To carry out audits to evaluate the effectiveness of Health, safety & Environmental systems, and procedures, identify and implement improvements.

Investigate and to assist others to investigate the circumstances and causes of accidents and take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence.

To ensure routine Health & Safety activities and checks are carried out e.g., testing of portable electrical appliances, internal asbestos surveying, emergency lighting, the review of risk assessments and where necessary introduce relevant control measures.

Support the Quality team with their ISO9001 auditing requirements.

Skills & Experience required for the role:


NEBOSH Diploma or higher/similar.
Chartered member of IOSH (or working towards)


Knowledge of ISO45001, ISO14001 and REACH.
Management of emergency procedures.
