Simulation Analyst in Hertfordshire

Location: Hertford
Salary: Hidden
Recruiter: Ocado Innovation Ltd
Job Hours: Unknown

“We are on a mission: to transform the future of online grocery through cutting-edge technology innovation.

” What does the team do: Ocado Technology’s Simulation Analysis team generates data and insight on the performance of Ocado’s robotic warehouses, based on simulations of real and hypothetical warehouse operation.

Our analysis has a real impact on organisational decision-making, around how to use and develop this technology.

Our talented team of eight analysts - split between the UK and Bulgaria - is growing, as we address increasing demand for simulation analysis across the business.

As such, we are looking for a talented analyst to join the team.

You will work closely with these diverse stakeholders to understand their requirements, then configure the appropriate simulations and convert the results into clear and meaningful analysis.

Through research, experimentation and collaboration, you will become an expert in some of Ocado’s most advanced and complex technology.

How do we work?

“We all appreciate being part of an open and collaborative team, even when working remotely.

Every analyst spends a large part of their time actively working with the rest of the team - solving problems together, reviewing findings before sharing them with stakeholders, and offering technical support to each other.

We believe in the Kanban philosophy, and are always looking to improve our ways of working.

” What would I be doing?

We get a lot of different requests from different areas of the business.

You might spend a couple of days comparing the efficiency of different warehouse designs, followed by a week investigating the potential benefits of some new hardware, then a fortnight understanding system constraints in order to design better algorithms.

A typical piece of analysis work may involve: Liaising with stakeholders to understand their requirements.

Determining how best to answer these questions, which might be existing data, a spreadsheet model, a suite of simulations, or even not to answer at all.

Anticipating any additional functionality required (to the simulation, algorithms or tooling), and communicating with the relevant development teams.

Planning and configuring appropriate simulation studies.

In-depth analysis of the results, building a complete picture of the simulation behaviour.

Running further experiments and investigations into any unexpected or interesting behaviours.

Producing an accessible and understandable summary of the results, at the appropriate level of detail, with a clear description of the limitations and assumptions made.

The analysis will typically involve using some of the following (previous experience desirable): Microsoft Excel, Python (e.

g.

Jupyter, Pandas), SQL, Google BigQuery, Google Data Studio.

What we are looking for : Proven numeracy and a strong academic record, preferably demonstrated by a good STEM degree (or higher) from a top university.

Demonstrable experience of using data to answer open ended research questions and provide rigorous interpretations of the results.

A keen eye for detail, with the inquisitiveness and drive to understand things in depth.

Speed of learning, an ability to quickly pick up new ideas and use a wide range of tools to solve challenging problems.

Ability to communicate clearly and precisely with technical and non-technical teams, both verbally and in writing.

Drive to continually improve themselves and their team, and to find better ways of working.

This would make you stand out from the crowd : Proficiency with Python, SQL, Google Data Studio/BigQuery, or advanced spreadsheet use.

Experience of using  simulation to understand complex systems.

Knowledge of applied statistics (e.

g.

significance testing, regression, machine learning).

Familiarity with retail operations, or Ocado’s new “Rainbow” CFC technology.

Knowledge of business process mapping within operations or technology.

Experience working with Kanban or other agile methodologies.
