Job overview An opportunity has arisen for a specialty doctor just like you, seeking an alternative to the daily grind (only big cities can offer) to instead come and work in friendly Somerset at sunny Yeovil Emergency Department. This can be a permanent or fixed term position, part time or full time – we are very adaptable – working on a fully flexible, self-rostered, annualised rota. This post would particularly suit candidates who need control over their rota, enjoy travelling, or those with young families/ animals. We are a modern Foundation Trust, with a friendly supportive working environment; we have been repeatedly rated as one of the top-10 healthcare employers in the country. Away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, our diverse patient-mix of approximately 50,000 attendances per year (both adult and children) and responsibilities as an accredited Trauma Unit provide varied and interesting clinical challenges. Main duties of the job Safety first: during the first wave of the pandemic we introduced standard PPE in all ED areas (hot or cold) before it was mandated by Public Health England. We have never wanted for PPE, and have kept our corridors clear throughout the pandemic. Despite the pandemic, we are expanding our ED. This will provide us with an enhanced ED footprint by spring 2021, to include a dedicated ED- operated Paediatric Assessment Unit, and an enhanced majors area with individual cubicles and a dedicated mental health assessment area. We already have access to frailty, occupational therapy, stroke services, as well as a Specialty Assessment Unit to support flow seven days a week. We also have access to an award-winning Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit, which is co-located to the ED. Working for our organisation It is an interesting time to join Yeovil District Hospital given the global pandemic. We have been one of only a handful of acute trusts that have maintained flow throughout the Winter 2019/20 and throughout the pandemic (we are very proud of this, have published about it and are actively researching it). Our four-hour performance for the financial year to date is above 95%. The support and engagement of the Trust management at all levels enables the creative and rewarding work in that leads to these results – we appreciate this is not the norm. Yeovil Emergency Department was rated by the Care Quality Commission as Good overall for safe, effective, caring and well led service, and Outstanding as a responsive service. We were also ranked the best performing major trauma unit in the South West by the Trauma Audit Research Network. Detailed job description and main responsibilities A bespoke development programme is tailored to each ED clinical team member’s needs. This allows our team members to achieve acute and emergency care competencies, in line with the RCEM higher specialty training curriculum. This allows development of emergency care skills, support progress onto our CESR programme, or improve evidence for specialty training applications. Relevant life support courses are paid for by the trust, outside your study budget. All of these activities are supported through a purpose built education and clinical skills centre within the hospital. There is a high level of Consultant supervision and support with regular Clinical Governance meetings and bite size teaching sessions. Current team member special interests range from pre-hospital care to hospital at home, simulation, research, ultrasound and systems development. Audit and research interests are strongly encouraged. Yeovil District Hospital is located within the pleasant Somerset (and technically Dorset) countryside, only two hours from London and less than one hour from the world-famous Jurassic coast. Brand new single and family staff accommodation is located a few minutes away from the hospital, although most staff stay in the picturesque villages surrounding the town.Whether you are an established Specialty Doctor looking for a challenging new role, looking for a change of pace, or you think that life in a rural ED in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK might suit you, we would like to hear from you for a no-obligation chat.
