Dentist Job Description Summary

What does a dentist do?

On average dentists earn around £66,104.16 per year in the UK. Dentists are doctors who specialise in oral health. They carry out procedures such as tooth extractions, preparing and placing fillings, taking X-rays, administering local anaesthetics, and referring patients to dental therapists or hygienists. Dentists often oversee a clinical team whose aim is to provide safe and effective oral care.

How to become a dentist and how to earn more

To become a dentist you will need a degree in dentistry that is approved by the General Dental Council. The degree can be earned in five years and is usually followed by one or two years in postgraduate dental training. Dentists in general practice can earn more by starting their own practice or becoming a partner in an existing private practice. With experience, you could become a consultant, specialise in paediatrics, or become a department manager in a hospital. You can also progress to teaching trainee dentists.
