Who You Are / Your Next Challenge

We have a great opportunity for a results driven, confident and commercial individual to join PetroChina international (London) as a Quantitative Developer focused on the Power Market based in our London office. The position sits in between the Power Market Analysts, the Data Analysts and the Quant Team to drive the setup of all power modelling fundamentals required to run a comprehensive power trading and origination business. You will be responsible for understanding the market context of models and help guide the compromises necessary between the data and the development to support their rapid setup.

This role also supports the traders and originators, leading the rigorous and systematic construction, maintenance & analysis of models tracking supply & demand fundamentals for European countries, the understanding of their interaction with price and the interpretation of market developments.

You will have the opportunity to drive added value and contribute to the Power Business through the utilisation of this model infrastructure to assist with specific strategies and trading decisions, supporting the analyst by providing the statistical background to trading strategies from inception to close.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain pricing models and the fundamental supply/demand model for the European power market, including assessing and working with external providers.
  • Support the work of the Data Team, to complement their knowledge and help automate and optimise the business processes.
  • Work in co-operation with the long-term team on long-term analysis.
  • Own and drive the development of power models, ensuring data analysis, quant analysis and market analysis are aligned on delivering practical business benefits.
  • Integrate models into the trader’s and originator’s BAU, creating a systematic framework for profitable trading strategies and structured transactions.
  • Devise effective methods of visually displaying the pricing and fundamental data for European power markets.
  • Collaboratively and proactively work with the other parts of the gas/LNG/power/emissions business and external contacts to broaden knowledge and enhance analysis.
  • Utilise technology to increase the efficiency and automation of power market analysis including capturing and interpreting data and producing reports/tools for traders.

What we’re looking for / Skills that will help you in the role

  • Some experience of the power market, ideally for a trading desk in an energy market trading environment; utilities, producers or trading houses preferred.
  • Experience of developing and applying quantitative models to complex gas and/or power markets.
  • Programming skills (e.g., SQL, Python etc.) and experience of utilising large data sets.
  • Experience working closely with trading is preferred, but not essential.
  • Previous work experience in small, high-performance teams a distinct advantage.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
  • Strategic thinking, practical problem solving.
  • A positive attitude, highly self-motivating and able to manage stress are key characteristics for this role.
  • Flexibility, innovation, decisiveness, planning and control.
  • Posses good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, standard software and software dedicated to the trading activities.

Please note : This is a full-time, permanent position with the job based in Charing Cross, London.
