HSSE Environment and Sustainability Manager

London, Banbury or Birmingham (Hybrid working)

Chiltern Railways operate between the West Midlands and London, providing journey options to Aylesbury, Oxford, Birmingham, Stratford-Upon-Avon and other destinations.

The HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment) team support this in providing a safe railway environment to all its stakeholders, including the public and employees. 

The Environment and Sustainability Manager will develop and evolve the Chiltern environmental and energy management strategy to enable high standards of environmental performance across the Chiltern business.

In addition, the role will be responsible for driving and influencing positive change across all aspects of environmental and sustainability management, by ensuring the business is compliant to relevant environment legislation.

The Environment and Sustainability Manager will be required to manage both internal and external validation audits to provide business assurance, and drive continuous improvement in line with the business’s long term environmental and sustainability strategies and contractual obligations

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and ensure compliance against environmental legal and other requirements, including statutory training and reporting.

  • Develop and actively manage Chiltern’s environmental strategy as required within its contract with the DfT.

  • Provide the Chiltern business with timely, balanced, comprehensible environmental advice that supports Arriva’s sustainability strategy and values.

  • Develop environmental training as necessary to meet DfT requirements.

  • Coordinate and support the management of key initiatives and commitments within the DfT contract that specifically relate to environmental performance.

  • Prepare and provide environmental reports and information for key internal and external forums and monitor the environmental metrics for key trends.

  • Represent Chiltern on Environmental matters in industry, Arriva UK Trains (AUKT) and Chiltern meetings/forums.

  • Work with the Head of HSSE and wider HSSE team to set objectives and targets as part of the team’s annual workplan.

  • Monitor close call and incident trends that have an environmental impact, assisting managers with investigations and improvements.

  • Attend internal meetings as the environmental SME, and other meetings as deemed necessary by the Head of HSSE.

  • Collaborate with other SMEs, teams and unions in Chiltern Railways as required.

  • Collaborate with and attend external meetings with the regulator, industry bodies and other TOCs as required.

  • Maintain the necessary competence to fulfil the role, staying abreast of legislation changes and scanning the horizon for best practice and innovation.

  • What we are looking for:

  • Experience of developing, implementing and maintaining an environmental management system.

  • Ability to develop and monitor of environmental KPIs.

  • Good knowledge of environmental legislation.

  • Application of environmental management principles in a railway industry setting.

  • Understanding of ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 application and latest developments in the standards.

  • Strong IT skills with confidence in data management and spreadsheets.

  • Able to think creatively and methodically to identify environmental opportunities and risks.

  • Ability to produce clear and accurate reports.

  • Strong communications and interpersonal capability across all levels of the business and stakeholder groups.

  • Able to prioritise workloads, make timely, justifiable decisions and be flexible in approach.

  • ISO 14001 lead auditor qualification.

  • Environmental qualification supporting membership of IEMA.

  • Ability to influence internal stakeholders, communicating clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to represent Chiltern Railways in discussions with external stakeholders (e.g. industry groups, regulator, other TOCs, etc).

  • Highly motivated with a strong desire for continual improvement.

  • Hold PTS.

  • Desirable Criteria:

  • Awareness of basic health and safety principles.

  • ISO 50001 lead auditor qualification.
