ROLE PROFILE:

Electrical Design Engineer with 3 years or more experience working with IDNO’s, DNO’s or ICP’s in the United Kingdom.

The position requires good knowledge and understanding of the DNO/IDNO G81 standards across UK & Ireland.

The successful candidate will be joining an Independent Connection Provider (ICP) who have full UK coverage, the Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design of secondary substation as well as be involved with and work across other exciting new and ongoing projects. If required there will be the opportunity to receive specialist training and have the opportunity to progress your career within an expanding company.

The day-to-day duties of the Designer is to ensure that works are designed to minimise risks during the construction, operation, maintenance and decommissioning/demolition phases. With responsibility to ensure that all designs meet regulatory, statutory, client and industry requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Initial and ongoing liaison with the client to establish the design parameters.
  • Liaising with the DNO and adopting IDNO to obtain design approval.
  • Liaise with client to produce accurate designs.
  • Bill of quantities of equipment in line with relevant IEC, DNO, IDNO, and client specifications.
  • Cable calculations, Earthing calculations & layouts and Electrical SLD.
  • Design cable route plan and substation civil design / layouts / Elevations to DNO / IDNO standard
  • Establish sufficient relevant information to carry out risk assessments in relation to the network type and construction methods to be incorporated into the design.
  • Design the network using design tools such as AutoCAD/Windebut/Amtech, selecting the correct demand/voltage and thus the network routing, terminations and any requirement for switchgear etc.
  • Development, review of the single-line diagrams and Protection settings.
  • Maintaining a record of the progress of each design project in respect of design progress, communication and notices/applications/forms etc.
  • Ensure design is legally compliant and if third party land access required provide information to allow wayleaves/servitudes to be agreed.
  • Maintaining all design records including calculations and any assumptions made.
  • Any other duties your line manager may assign to you from time to time.

THE BELOW EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED:

  • Strong electrical engineering background
  • Experience doing electrical design on DNO/IDNO substations.
  • Knowledge of power system and design at 33kv, 11kv & 400V.
  • Good safety culture and sound understanding of construction design and management.
  • Proficient use of AutoCAD and / HV Amtech.
  • Broad knowledge of cables and overhead lines.
  • Engineering Qualification & relevant professional body.
  • Maintain awareness of Ethical Power Connections’ Health & Safety policy and company policies and keep up to date on changes that impact your role.
  • Managing Drawing register and design submissions to the DNO/Client.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear reports to

convey complex information in a simple way to a diverse range of people

  • Ability to work independently with strong interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Ability to challenge information presented
  • Relevant Electrical Industry Experience
  • The Electrical Designer must have relevant experience in the UK market with a DNO, IDNO, ICP on the UKPN and SSEN networks.
  • Design experience – Underground Cables - and experience designing underground infrastructure.
  • Design experience – Secondary substation - and experience designing secondar substation infrastructure

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree or similar qualification in Electrical Engineering discipline.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The successful candidate must be willing to travel to sites across London & South East and throughout the UK as and when required for site meetings with stakeholders.
