The role

Provide strategic and business planning support to the international Finance practice group with a focus on its international Projects practice stream. This includes ensuring the preparation and delivery of effective pitch documents and dynamic marketing and business development action plans designed to achieve the business objectives of the internatonal Projects business.

Projects is one of three core ‘practice streams’ in the international Finance group. As such, this is a pivotal role in helping to drive forward the continued progress of both the practice stream and wider group through a wide range of complex and high profile campaigns, events and client development activity.

Experience in Projects would therefore be beneficial, though not essential. Whilst the role has a broad remit, it does have have a significant focus on planning and producing pitch and similar documents.

This role will sit with the core Finance group Marketing & Business Development (MBD) team in the UK. The team is further supported by aligned marketing colleagues in the wider team and the Global Service Centre (GSC).

This role will work with the International Projects leader and UK Projects leader as well as other senior partners.

As well as working with the Head of Marketing & Business Development – Finance, this role will also work closely with the Special Counsel – International Projects, and the Infrastructure, Transport & Construction sector and Energy sector groups MBD teams.

Some travel within the UK and internationally may be required with the role.

Background:

DLA Piper’s Finance group provides integrated advice and market insight globally, representing leading investment and commercial financial institutions, funds, public and private companies and government entities. We assist clients to realise their finance and investment strategies within the commercial, legal and political environment of the host country/s in which they are operating.

The international Finance group encompasses:

  • (Core) Finance – advising clients across the full spectrum of banking and finance – across all sectors.
  • Projects – advising clients across the full project lifecycle – in particular across the ICT, Industrials and ENR sectors, and beyond.
  • Restructuring –  advising clients on all matters in underperforming and distressed situations – across all sectors.

Our Projects team provides legal advice on every aspect of a project from the procurement strategy, tax structuring, contractual documentation and risk allocation through to finance structuring – often working on joint ventures and other collaborations across the infrastructure and energy sectors and beyond.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Contribute to the development and content of the business development, marketing and communications strategy across the Projects practice stream:

  1. Work in partnership with colleagues in developing and executing effective BD and marketing programmes, initiatives and campaigns
  2. Ensure group pitches are effectively managed and produced, coaching those partners and lawyers involved in major business development activity
  3. Adopt a sector go-to-market strategy particularly where Projects’ activities intersect with particular Sectors
  4. Promote collaboration and capailise on opportunities across the Finance group by working closely with MBD and fee earning colleagues in all parts of the international practice group
  • Ensure allocated budgets are effectively handled and that investment is targeted at agreed priorities
  • Lead the group’s approach to new business development (including in particular the research, development and roll out of new products), providing fresh thinking and dynamic strategies
  • Provide coaching/mentoring/consultancy for the Practice Stream Leads and key stakeholders across the International firm
  • Develop and build key client and industry relationships, participating in client reviews when necessary
  • Ensure that international requirements are fully understood and taken into account by the group in its marketing activity
  • Ensure effective communication of group issues to all members of the group
  • Provide leadership and direction to support the group marketing team, ensuring they are kept fully informed of developments, issues and requirements of the group
  • Drive cross-selling and client targeting initiatives and participate in key client programmes
  • Work collaboratively with the other support functions to provide a seamless service to the group
  • Become involved with Account Management for the firm’s key client relationships
  • Some line management responsibility of MBD support colleagues.

The job holder may be required to undertake additional duties as required.

ABOUT YOU

The successful candidate must be/have:

  • Degree educated
  • Knowledge of MBD processes – a sound understanding of new business processes, CRM and the emerging technologies needed to help us win and retain clients legal work
  • This role would particularly suit someone with knowledge and experience within a legal/professional services context, ideally with a focus on Restructuring/Finance
  • Confident, credible and with experience of working with senior partners – the candiate will relish the opportunity of leading the MBD activity (including contributing to strategy and planning) of an international practice stream group. The candidate will be able to work on their own initiative and also as part of a wider team with a collaborative working style
  • Sales techniques and coaching skills
  • A professional approach, score highly in terms of commitment and internal client care
  • Excellent communication and project management skills.  You will be expected to have strong probing, consultative listening skills coupled with the ability to negotiate and persuade legal and client personnel
  • Good understanding of the practice group and commercially minded 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy
  • A proven ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information
  • Experience in dealing with a demanding workload and conflicting priorities
  • Able to multi-task and work to deadlines, be methodical and logical, as well as thrive in a robust and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to see delegated tasks through to completion at a high standard
  • Ability to stay calm and composed in demanding situations
  • IT literate and supportive of adopting new technologies to improve internal processes and the client experience/delivery
  • Display a consistently positive attitude and adopt a ‘can do’ approach Be able to communicate confidently and effectively at all levels.
