About Sillion

Sillion is a consultancy on a mission to drive the sustainability transition. Our innovative and forward-thinking advisory business combines technical expertise in sustainability, a deep focus on proprietary modelling tools, and an in-depth understanding of stakeholder needs and communication. We give management teams actionable information on strategy and operations, and provide finance teams with data, insights, and reporting for current and coming regulatory requirements.

At four years young, we have already built a broad portfolio of clients – primarily large, listed corporates across Europe, Asia, and the US. Sillion’s insights drive substantive changes to our clients’ strategies and CapEx from the C-suite down and deliver large-scale, real-world sustainability impact.

The Opportunity

Capitalizing on the success of our existing offering in climate scenario analysis, and transition risk and opportunity, Sillion is seeking a knowledgeable, insightful and productive full-stack Senior Software Engineer to build the next generation of our data analytics and business intelligence systems. Joining the newly established Engineering Team at Sillion, this is a pivotal role, in which you will help define the course of a multi-year journey to support companies through the climate transition and deliver the leading tool for climate risk and net-zero pathways.

Our pioneering approach uses a proprietary modelling tool and integrates tailored models for each client to solve multiple challenges pertaining to sustainability strategy and disclosure. We are already successfully delivering this product to FTSE100 and FTSE250 clients in a variety of sectors from automotive to industrials to distribution. As you help design the next iteration of this system, you will need to consider high availability, high throughput, data consistency and security, but we will count on you to challenge and refine these requirements as well as working to deliver the system. You will be as excited getting your hands dirty across the development lifecycle as you are being a leader and mentor in a world-class engineering team in the longer term.

You will:

  • Collaborate with adjacent teams and the wider company to design, prioritise, develop and implement software solutions to address complex business issues.
  • Be productive as an independent contributor, able to make pragmatic decisions about development, quickly grasp the nuances of requirements and identify critical decision points for stakeholders.
  • Drive requirements clarity for ambiguous problems and produce technical design documents and project plans.
  • Implement software and infrastructure that is designed and built on foundations of strong security, correct results, and reliable auditability.
  • Ensure data governance, compliance, and privacy are upheld across all data-related operations.
  • Help to establish and evolve the standards and practices of the new Engineering Team.

Experience

We believe that skills and experience such as these will set you up for success in this role, but we do not view this as an exhaustive list. Our team thrives on diverse perspectives so if you feel you could be a good fit then we want to hear from you even if you don’t tick all these boxes.

An established Senior Software Engineer, with a history of delivering at that level, especially in a startup environment where responsibilities can be far reaching.

  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in software development and systems engineering.
  • A track record of delivering and maintaining production software systems built using Python and TypeScript/JavaScript, but you are language agnostic, and quick to pick up new tools and be productive in new development paradigms.
  • Able to hit the ground running when delivering software systems that incorporate various data backends, query languages and ORM frameworks.
  • Experience designing and building ETL pipelines built around libraries and frameworks like Pandas and Apache Spark.
  • Strong API design skills and a familiarity with building web applications.
  • A proponent of great testing, first-class observability and automating everything.
  • Familiarity with security principles and practices, including authentication, authorization, and encryption.
  • Experience with cloud technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Helm & Terraform) and platforms (e.g. AWS, GCP & Azure).
  • Prior experience in the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) sector, or a deep understanding of sustainability and climate-related issues.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly in cross-functional teams.

We offer faster progression, better pay, more opportunities and a good deal more excitement and adventure than you are likely to find at other consultancies. We want to build the most respected consultancy in the sector, doing the best work for clients, and having fun with brilliant people in a diverse team.
